Our students enjoyed class parties and time with their club groups as we wrapped up the day before winter break. There were lots of smiles, laughter, and special moments spent celebrating together. Winter has definitely arrived, and with all the snow on the ground, many students are eager to climb and play on the snow piles during recess. To make sure everyone can enjoy outdoor play safely and comfortably, please be sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather each day.
Students who wish to play on the snow piles will need to have a warm coat, hat, gloves, and boots. These items help keep our students warm, dry, and ready for learning after recess.

Yesterday, a few students from each class were selected to attend the NCAA Division II college volleyball game — all because they’ve been showing strong leadership in the classroom! 🏐💙
These students consistently model positive behavior, make responsible choices, and demonstrate what it means to be true Garfield leaders. As a special recognition, they had the opportunity to cheer on collegiate athletes, experience the excitement of a live game, and represent our school with pride.

Yesterday, we had an awesome surprise at Garfield — the Wingate Volleyball Team from North Carolina came to visit and play with our students in PE! 🏐💙

For the month of December, students with perfect attendance each week will earn a candy cane! That means being here on time, every day. Students can earn up to 4 candy canes, including during the short week before Christmas break.
🏆 At the end of the month, the class with the best overall attendance will take home the Attendance Trophy!
Let’s finish the year strong—encourage your students to aim high and show up every day! 💪✨

🦋 First Grade Field Trip Fun! 🦋
Our first graders had an amazing adventure at the Butterfly House yesterday! They were so excited to explore, learn, and see the butterflies up close. From walking through the tropical gardens filled with colorful butterflies to spotting caterpillars and chrysalises, there was so much to discover! 🌸🐛🌿
Students learned all about the butterfly life cycle, their habitats, and the important role they play in nature. It was such a fun and educational experience filled with wonder, laughter, and lots of smiles! 💙✨
A huge thank-you to the Butterfly House staff for making the day so memorable and to our wonderful teachers and chaperones who helped make it happen! 🦋💛

Miss Koch is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, where she also played soccer for four years! ⚽
She loves traveling and exploring new places—she’s even been out of the country three times to Canada, Costa Rica, and Spain! 🌎✈️
Before joining Garfield, Miss Koch taught 4th grade, and this is her first year teaching Kindergarten—as well as her first time living outside of Iowa! 💛
